In their article “Construction on Rock,” Civil Engineers Online aver, “Building on rock offers many benefits, which include stability, durability, reduced costs, efficient construction, protection from natural disasters, better drainage, lower environmental impact, longevity, fire resistance, and aesthetics. These benefits make rock an ideal foundation material for many types of structures.” In Matthew 16:13–18, Jesus and His disciples are having a moment of self-reflection. Jesus wanted His disciples to know His true identity. So, He asked questions. The first Question: Who do people say that the Son of Man is? The second question: who do you say that I Am? In response to Peter’s personal encounter and confession of Jesus as the Christ, the Son of the living God, against the perception of the general public, Jesus declares, I will build my church upon Peter (or the rock), and the gates of Hades won’t prevail against the church. Peter’s confession of Jesus was based on personal encounters, not on hearsay. The church is built on Jesus Christ, the Son of the living God, as the Rock (1 Corinthians 10:4). Therefore, Jesus is the Builder of the church. Jesus is still building His church and the opposition of the devil, the human systems, and wicked leadership will not prevail against Jesus’ church. Jesus is the owner of the church. The true church purchased by the blood of Jesus Christ is not and can never be a human empire. As we launch FOL Church on July 30, 2023, we were reminded in this text of Matthew to stand on Christ the solid Rock, knowing that all other grounds and systems are sinking sands. Christ is building and sustaining His church. Just as Jesus worked in and through apostle Peter, He wants to work in and through you to build His Church. Your obedience to God the Father makes you acknowledge Jesus as the Christ, the Son of the living God. Your confession of Jesus, flowing from your personal encounter with Him as the Christ, the Son of the living God, opens the door for the power of Christ to flow in and through you for the mission of building the church.
