Spiritual blindness and lostness are devastating to human beings. What is spiritual blindness? Spiritual blindness is a grievous condition experienced by those who do not believe in God, Jesus Christ, and His Word (Romans 2:8; 2 Thessalonians 2:12).1 Sin leads to spiritual blindness because we have fallen short of God’s glory (Romans 3:23).
John Piper says, “All human beings are spiritually blind to the superior value of the glory of God. We can see, but there’s something wrong with our spiritual capacities to discern the beauty and value of what we see so that we always wind up preferring other things over God.”2 John reveals the blindness of the man from birth as a symbolism of spiritual blindness (John 9:1-5 ). It signals that human beings are spiritually blind and lost from birth, just as the Pharisees say to the man born blind: “You were born entirely in sin” (Jn. 9:34), which is true in one sense. David in Psalm 51:5, CSB: “Indeed, I was guilty when I was born; I was sinful when my mother conceived me.” The religious Pharisees are a very good example of spiritual blindness (John 9:16, 24–25). Hence, be careful of the attitude of the Pharisees: 1. Superficial piety. 2. Suppressing the truth for a lie, and 3. Rejection of the Messiah, i.e., Christ. John tells us the reason “The Son of Man,” i.e., Jesus came. It is to destroy the works of the devil (1 John 3:8b). Beloved, Christ is the only light that shines in our spiritual blindness and restores our spiritual lostness (John 8:12, 9:5). Whoever that is in Christ are the conduits that God use to shine the light of his glory in the world. No wonder, Jesus says in John 20:21, “As the Father has sent me, I also send you.” You will be my witnesses (Mark 16:15; Acts 1:8). Go and make disciples of all nations for Christ (Matthew 28:18-20). People are living in spiritual blindness and lostness. Some of these people live in our communities and neighborhoods. Remember who you are in Christ and your task to be a conduit for the light of God’s glory to shine into someone’s spiritual blindness and lostness.
